SUMMARY: 

Position will facilitate and oversee completion of a basin-wide culvert inventory project in Watershed 
Resource Inventory Area (WRIA) 01, which includes the
Nooksack River watershed.  Completion 
of the project is anticipated in early 2005.  Extension of position is possible, but not guaranteed.   

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

(1)    Oversee 2 field crews in the implementation of WDFW SSHEAR stream-based inventories 
of barriers for tributary streams in WRIA 01; assessment of blocked habitat upstream and 
downstream of each identified fish passage barrier, including considerable field supervision, 
QA/QC of field forms, and data entry and analysis.

(2)    Provide quality assurance and quality control of culvert project field data collection; manage 
Microsoft Access database and ESRI ArcGIS geodatabase for barrier and habitat data; assist 
with summary and analysis of data to calculate Priority Indices for fish passage barrier removal.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Position will supervise 2 field crews of 2 technicians each for the culvert project until field data collection 
is completed, including 1 crew of tribal Nooksack Natural Resources (NNR) technicians and 1 crew from
Nooksack Salmon Enhancement Association (NSEA).  Supervision will include: (1) assignment of crews to
specific stream reaches; (2) monitoring of field data collection and daily to weekly QA/QC of field forms; 
(3) tracking crew progress; and (4) time sheet authorization of NNR technicians.   

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

Must have a minimum of B. S. degree in fisheries biology, freshwater ecology or related field.  Relevant work
experience is highly desired.

LANGUAGE SKILLS:

Successful applicant will possess excellent oral and written communication skills and will have experience with
grant writing and project management.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:

Applicant must possess a valid Washington State Driver’s License, and be authorized to work in the United
States.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:  To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform
each duty and responsibility satisfactorily, and possess the required skills, education, and experience.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

1.      Prior experience in implementation of SSHEAR protocols for fish passage barrier and stream habitat
      assessment.

2.      Familiarity and experience with Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint) 
      and ESRI GIS software (ArcView 3.xx and/or ArcGIS 8.xx), and with GPS.

3.      Understanding of salmonid biology, life histories, and habitat requirements.

4.      Prior experience in supervision of field crews.

5.      Experience working with Native American tribes.

The position will require the ability to work in the field both in streams and rivers, and during
inclement weather.

WORK ENVIRONMENT    The work environment characteristics described here are representative of
those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.  This position requires both
office and field work.  Field work entails working in large rivers and streams at a range of flows and weather
conditions.  Work schedule will vary from daytime hours during summer to early winter to being more variable
but potentially including some evening and nighttime hours from late winter to early summer.  Reasonable
