NATIVE AMERICAN CAREER AND TECHNICAL EDUCATION PROGRAM  (NACTEP)
Working Beyond Working Paths

The Native American Career and Technical Education Program through the Department of Education have selected the Nooksack Indian Tribe’s Education Department to provide career and technical education to individuals with barriers to educational achievement. 

The Nooksack Education Department would like to encourage tribal members to apply for this wonderful educational opportunity!  The Grant will fund 30 participants.  Those who are selected by the Nooksack Education Advisory Committee may receive assistance such as tuition and fees, a stipend, dependent care, transportation, books and supplies that are necessary for a student to participant in this project.  All services provided through the NACTEP are based on demonstrated need which is determined by the school’s financial aid office.  Participants are subject to meet criteria set by Federal Poverty Guidelines to quality for the stipend.  A mileage allowance rate is set by the Internal Revenue Service.

The Education Department is accepting applications on a continuous basis.

Anyone interested in pursuing a career in a technical trade is eligible to attend either Bellingham Technical College or with limited program selection at Whatcom Community College or Northwest Indian College.  Those programs of studies inclusive in this 60-month grate include:  Architecture, Construction, Business Management and Administration, Health Science and Hospitality and Tourism.  Successful participants who graduate will benefit programs that will benefit the Tribes Economic Development.

At minimum participants will receive the following services

1.  In-depth career exploration and career planning

2.  Contextual learning opportunities that connect education and school to the work place, and assist the
     application of basic skills to life situations

3.  Enhance the development of occupational and academic competencies that facilitate transition into advanced
     placement in post-secondary career preparation programs

4.  Enhance the development of occupational competencies necessary for entering an occupation

 

 WASHINGTON STATE ARTS COMMISSION

 The Washington State Arts Commission has provided limited funds to expose our tribal children to the arts. 

 We are looking for tribal elders to teach our children arts and crafts including basket weaving, knitting, crocheting, paddle making, caring, cooking and preparing traditional foods, canning, language and culture.  If you know of an elder who would like to share their gift with our trial children, please call the Education Department.    

BUREAU OF INDIAN AFFAIRS

HIGHER EDUCATION

Limited funds are available for tribal members who are pursuing higher education at the postsecondary level through the Bureau of Indian Affairs.  These funds are appropriated through Congress and disbursed to the Bureau of Indian Affairs and administered through the Education Department.  Applicants must be an enrolled Nooksack Tribal member, attending an accredited postsecondary institution full-time and must maintain satisfactory progress. 


ADULT VOCATIONAL EDUCATION

Limited funds are available for tribal members who are pursuing a vocational or technical trade at the postsecondary level through the Bureau of Indian Affairs.  These funds are also appropriated through Congress and disbursed to the Bureau of Indian Affairs and administered by the Education Department.  Applicants must an enrolled Nooksack Tribal member, attending an accredited vocational/technical postsecondary institution full-time and must maintain satisfactory progress.

 
ADULT BASIC EDUCATION/GENERAL EDUCATION DIPLOMA

The Bureau of Indian Affairs disburses funds to the Nooksack Education Department to cover GED testing fees. 

MOON DANCE FOREST was recently hired as the ABE/GED teacher for the Nooksack Learning Opportunity Center.  She is a faculty member of Bellingham Technical College.  She provides GED preparation on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursdays from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

JOHNSON OMALLEY PROGRAM

Very limited funds are available for students kindergarten aged children to seniors in high school.  Ideally, we would like to work with the schools when requesting funds from this program because the funds are so limited.  If your child needs assistance with such things such as ASB fees, school related fees, school supplies, school related expenses, we need a referral from a school official.  JOM funds cannot be used to cover expenses such as library fines, lost books or other disciplinary fines.
