Job Title: TANF Caseworker/Advocate- (Deming)

Closing Date: 6/28/2010This position provides both Advocacy and Case Management services to the clients in a Tribal based setting. This position will provide support services to the clients to promote self sufficiency, educational opportunities, and reviews training possibilities for work readiness and increases the overall wellbeing of clients, children and their families. This Caseworker/Advocate will work to collaborate and provide more effective “wrap around services” with other departments such as: Child Support, ICW/Youth and Family Services, Social Services, Housing Authority, etc.
The TANF Caseworker/Advocate will be responsible to manage assigned caseload of intake and eligibility. Responsible for on-going maintenance of TANF Cases by conducting and completing client interviews, updates and eligibility.
PRINCIPLE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Promotes wellness and well being in the local communities.
2. Provide necessary paperwork, offering assistance to complete the paperwork, answering questions, making copies for client or assisting with telephone requests for required documentation and completion of client intake and all necessary paperwork.
3. Acts as a referral source for men, women, and children who are concerned for their safety.
4. Works in the community to develop work service participation hours for Tribal TANF recipients.
5. Develops and implements work service possibilities in the rural communities.
6. Maintains records, compiles data and submits monthly reports and check requests to Director for approval for TANF payments.
7. Understands the eligibility criteria, policy and procedure guidelines for Tribal TANF.
8. Attends appropriate training to enhance ability and skill for TANF.
9. Encourages self sufficiency and the reduction of welfare assistance.
10. Provides educational opportunities and promotes self sufficiency for all TANF recipients and makes referrals to appropriate programs or agencies to reduce welfare dependency.
11. Participates in continuation of quality improvements to overall service delivery.
12. Meets on a regular basis with clients to offer support, guidance, encouragement and continued participation in overall wellness, independence and safety.
13. Some travel required.
High school diploma or equivalent. One year relevant work experience. Experience with Microsoft Word and Excel. Must hold current First Aide/CPR or obtain within 90 days of hire. Must be able to work evenings, weekends, and occasionally on short notice in response to crisis situations. Demonstrated ability to work with people. Familiarity with the Nooksack Indian Tribe, its culture, people and ability to speak in public and conduct presentations.
Must have a valid Washington State Driver’s License and be insurable under NIT’s insurance policy.
KNOWLEDGE:
Caseworker/Advocate must learn and know the public assistance laws, rules, regulations, service programs, and employment programs. Should also be familiar with basic tribal office procedures and practices; and other tribal programs providing services for the Nooksack Community.
ABILITY & SKILLS:
Must have the ability to make independent conclusions and decision; evaluate and recommend changes in assistance plan; work cooperatively with co-workers and public; to practice tact, courtesy and discretion. Must have the skills to utilize different computer software and networking; submit reports and written communications in a timely manner; establish a positive channel of communication among co-workers, tribal staff, public, and others involved in serving the client; to process applications to meet deadlines and appropriate timeframes. Must have the ability to maintain confidentiality at all times.
